Minutes of 1/8/10 NY Executive Committee meeting

Venue: Hibiscus Restaurant, Richmond Hill Queens

Time: 9-10pm

Attending: Kris Lachman, Riaz Bacchus, Radha and Howard Bernstein, Ganee Abdool, Dev Chedda, Shirley Brijlal

Topics discussed:

  1. The committee debated on the next best project to finance with the funds that were raised last August. The pros and cons of text books as requested by the Head Mistress vs. computers were discussed. Shirley & Riaz will get an updated wish list of text books needed by LCGSS from the Head Mistress
  2. Mr. Anan Soman is currently in Guyana and visited the school. He has emailed us back a detailed report on the needs of the computer room which is extensive. Dev will be checking into the costs of computer upgrades as recommended by Mr. Soman. It is possible that we can accommodate both the text books and the computer upgrades at this time.
  3. We were informed that the Guyana Ambassador to Canada, Mr. Doobay has an organization that gives matching funds to those that contribute to Guyanese schools.  Riaz will investigate the validity of this.
  4. Riaz will speak to Sagar in Canada to inform him what we are doing here and to get feeback on projects they have or are working on. This will avoid any potential duplication in efforts between the NY and Canadian Committees.
  5. Radha is still working on the tax filing status.
  6. Annual fund raiser for 2010: Next meeting each member is to bring an idea for the event along with possible dates and venues.
  7. Howard will contact the One Lap Top Child organization which arranges $300 laptop for impoverished schools world wide to see if it could be a fit for LCGSS
  8. We will make an effort to reach out to new LCGSS graduates to make them aware of our organization, through the Head Mistress and some research on the internet etc. We need to bring the younger generations of LCGSS Alumni on board. Shirley, Eno and Kris will work on this and also Rakesh Ragubir will be contacted
  9. Broadband internet service at LCGSS costs US$600.00 per year and we are discussing funding that for now
  10. Next meeting scheduled for 2/5/10
